East Coast Quake Shakes Up Social Media

Posted On 08.23.2011

As if the media outlets even had a chance, news of today’s east coast earthquake fluttered across the social media waves before the aftershock had finished. Facebook and Twitter updates included everything from news reports to jokes (like DS developer Chris Fidao’s tweet “I’m an #earthquake survivor!”) to the occasional complaint of not feeling the shudder!

It wasn’t until several minutes later (personally, I saw the news exactly 19 minutes after the quake) that the facts were set: Virginia was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9. By then, DS designer Inessa had captured video of the rampant feedback for the term “earthquake” in Twitter. Almost makes the math in this comic seem legit. Maybe tweets do travel faster than the seismic waves.

In the meantime, this definitely puts the disaster in Japan into perspective.
