Amazon vs. New York Tax Law: Are Big Changes in Store for Internet Businesses?

The State of New York’s new tax law requires that all online retailers “doing business in New York” register with the state to collect sales taxes by June 1, 2008. Those who do not register, will face audits for quarters previous to the deadline. Internet superstar Amazon is suing New York State Department of Taxation and Finance (DTF)over this new tax law they describe as unconstitutional. If this tax law is upheld in the courts, the other states are likely to follow and the door is open for more and even broader taxes on internet commerce.

Can Google Get any Bigger People?

With first quarter 2008 earnings of $5.19 billion, search engine monster Google shows an incredible 42% increase over first quarter 2007 figures. Google continues to lead the industry in market share for online searches, as a trend setter for standards and features, and as the make of webmaster guidelines site building. Online businesses cannot afford to keep turning a blind eye to Google and search marketing should be a critical item in the marketing budget.
